Water is a human being's most basic need and the world today is facing a problem of insufficient clean water supply.
According to the UN World Water Development Report in 2015, there will be a 55 per cent increase in water demand by 2030, but the resources can only meet 60 per cent of the world's water needs.
Datuk Loo Took Gee, Advisor to the Minister of Energy, Green Technology & Water, believes that there needs to be a change in our mindsets about the world's supply of water being infinite – it is not.
"The general perception is that there is so much water in this world, when in fact, 97 per cent of the Earth's water is found in the ocean, leaving only 3 per cent that is available in the form of clean water for meeting the needs of human beings. So, the issue we are facing now is the provision of adequate clean, potable water to meet this increasing demand," she said.
Instead of relying on surface water or building new water treatment plants, the Malaysian Government is exploring alternative technologies and innovations to augment our existing water resources and ensure uninterrupted water supply for its people.
One example is the Labu Off-River Storage scheme, which is built for supplying water to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), the biggest airport in Malaysia. The scheme is located at a river, namely Sg. Labu in Selangor, which is 10 kilometers away from KLIA.
The concept adopted here is to build the water facility near the demand center, harvesting water during the rainy period to be used during drought period. The scheme can supply water for a maximum of three months during dry period. It stabilises the water quantity and quality, ensuring uninterrupted supply to KLIA throughout the year.
The project was completed in 2012 and currently supplies 105 million liters per day to KLIA and surrounding areas.
